"10 Steps to a More Profitable Construction Business," by Leslie Shiner
Setting SMART Goals Everyone has goals, but to reach them you have to make them "SMART." Arina Nikitina, at www.goal-setting-guide.com, has put these principles in concise, usable terms. "Construction Risk Management," advertised as "the most detailed work ever done on the subject of construction insurance, bonding, and risk management," is endorsed by the Associated General Contractors of America, the American Subcontractors Association, and others. Available in hard copy, or on line. Published by International Risk Management Institute (www.irmi.com). Also see their web site for FREE newsletters; 957 articles on risk management (such as "Killer Bond Forms and Contract Provisions" and "Contractor's Professional Liability Update"); and, their ZERORISK HR.
"California Public Records Act" Like the U. S. "Freedom of Information Act," it requires California public entities to make documents available to the public on request.
"Retention Escrow" Earn interest on retention, and maybe get it faster. California Public Contract Code Section 22300 requires public agencies to allow retention to be held in escrow and earn interest for the contractor. Subs on public works are entitled to their portion of the interest. Banks advertising this service have included Comerica, Union, Mechanics and Bank of Sacramento. Once you have a bank to work with, a simple fax is usually all it takes.
