Special Board Meeting, Monday, December 3, 2007

At the request of the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, AACA's Board of Directors met with Isam Hasenin, William Strawn and Ben Yee.
Mr. Hasenin accepted his position nine months ago, with a mandate from Mayor Gavin Newsom to improve the inspection process. He had formerly held a similar postion for the City of San Diego, and was recruited because the City specifically wanted an "outsider" to take charge.
He reported that he had spent much of his first nine months getting to know the department, instituting "quick fixes" where appropriate and starting to develop approaches to the more complex issues.
He established a formal internal review process, and sought input from over 300 sources, including contractors, AIA, BOMA and others. A formal report on that process will be presented to Mayor Newsom next week, and posted on the DBI web site. AACA will provide a link on our site, when available.
Mr. Hasenin expressed a philosophy of non-political, ethical processing; training staff to feel comfortable helping the public; and, a "guaranteed second opinion:" Where we might disagree with a DBI decision, he wants us to know how to get a decision reviewed (without fear of backlash), and expressed a personal "open door" policy if we feel it necessary to go to him, specifically.
